Brazil is out!
The record world champions are eliminated in the World Cup Round of 16 by Norway and must head home after two late goals from Erling Haaland (79th, 90th) (to the match report >>>).
The exit is particularly bitter for Neymar. The superstar breaks down in tears on the pitch after the final whistle. Although he scores the consolation goal in the tenth minute of stoppage time, it comes too late for a turnaround.
Immediately afterwards, he ends his national team career following the defeat. In the interview after the game, he says: "I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium and it ends here too. It's over now."
In 130 games, Neymar scored 80 times, making him the country's record goalscorer.
Title Drought Since 2002
After the match, captain Marquinhos also faces the media and reflects on the bitter exit: "Unexplainable what happened there. We had chances, a penalty that we didn't convert. The team that makes fewer mistakes wins the game."
With the exit against Norway, Brazil's World Cup drought continues. Since winning the title in 2002, the record world champions have now been waiting in vain for their next triumph for six World Cups. This is the "Selecao's" longest dry spell since World War II.
"We Don't Know What Will Happen"
After this renewed failure, a shake-up seems inevitable. Captain Marquinhos also makes it clear that changes are needed:
"Now a new phase begins for the national team. We don't know what will happen. I ask the public to be lenient with us. It's clear that we cannot continue to play like this. We have four years until the next World Cup, and we hope to win there."
