Following his withdrawal from the tournament in Beijing, Italian media are now reporting that the South Tyrolean also cannot participate in the ATP 1000 event in Shanghai.
If the conservative rehabilitation does not work as hoped, an operation might become necessary. In the worst-case scenario, Sinner even faces an early end to his season. In this case, Sinner would also miss the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna at the end of October. Tournament Director Straka recently expressed optimism that the defending champion would be fit in time.

Zverev: New World Number One Soon?
Since Sinner cannot defend his title in Beijing, he loses 500 points in the world rankings. Should Zverev capitalize on this and win the tournament, he would only be 870 points behind the South Tyrolean.
Should Sinner then actually withdraw from the tournament in Shanghai and Zverev also take full points here, he would be the second German at the top of the ATP world rankings alongside Boris Becker.
