The 18-year-old Austrian lost her first-round match in the Chinese capital on Wednesday with a score of 4:6, 2:6 against Romanian Elena Gabriela Ruse (WTA-62).
In the first set, Tagger dropped her own serve three times, then twice in the second set – too much to threaten her 28-year-old opponent, who is ranked one spot behind Tagger in the world rankings. The match was decided after 1 hour and 25 minutes.
For Tagger, who is ranked 61st in the world, it was her first appearance since her second-round exit at the US Open.
