Sinja Kraus Fights Through in WTA 1000 Duel with Potapova
The 24-year-old Viennese player makes it past the first round of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in Beijing.

The 24-year-old won her first-round match at the WTA 1000 hardcourt tournament in Beijing on Wednesday, defeating Australian Maya Joint (WTA No. 75) in three sets: 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
It's the first time Kraus has advanced past the first round of a WTA 1000 tournament.
Kraus Fights Through
The first set went according to plan for Kraus; while she dropped her serve only once, her opponent suffered three breaks. The fifth set point eventually led to a 6-3 win. Joint quickly recovered from this setback and managed to equalize in the second set.
Kraus held her nerve in the decisive set. At 5-4 and serving for the match, she missed a match point and lost the game, but she didn't let it get to her and successfully closed out the match with a 7-5.
Duel with Potapova Awaits
In the WTA live rankings, Kraus now appears at No. 89 after her victory – her career-high is No. 80.
In the second round, Kraus will face her compatriot Anastasia Potapova, who received a bye in the first round as the 16th seed.
