Real defender out for months
The defender must undergo surgery. Real Madrid faces another shortage in central defense.
Real Madrid will likely have to do without Raul Asencio for several months.
As the "Royals" announced on Wednesday, the central defender will be out long-term. The 23-year-old must undergo surgery on Thursday after a stress fracture was diagnosed in his right tibia.
Asencio had been suffering from a shin injury since January, but surgery was initially postponed.
Last season, the Spaniard featured for the Madrilenians in 34 competitive matches, but under new head coach Jose Mourinho, Asencio was initially – also due to injury – only a substitute and has not yet played in any match. Whether he will be back on the pitch this year is uncertain.
Real faces shortage
Due to the 23-year-old's absence, Real Madrid is facing another shortage in central defense. The club already struggled with personnel issues in central defense last season.
Currently, in addition to Asencio, Eder Militao and Ibrahima Konate are also out due to injury. Dean Huijsen will also miss the upcoming league match due to a red card suspension, leaving Mourinho with only one fit central defender in Antonio Rüdiger.
