The Vienna Vikings can slowly start their playoff planning in the AFLE.

Head coach Chris Calaycay's team clearly defeated Berlin Thunder 45:7 (35:7) on Sunday. It is their sixth victory in the sixth game of the season and already their second against the Berliners this year.

After the long journey to Berlin, the Vikings presented themselves focused from the start and controlled the game in all four quarters.

The offense quickly found its rhythm, consistently pressuring the Berlin defense, while the Viennese defense forced crucial stops, rarely allowing Berlin to gain momentum.

The Viennese ground game, in particular, was outstanding. Pajarinen (94 yards, 2 TD), Wiesigstrauch (75 yards, 2 TD) and Schütz (39 yards, 1 TD) scored in effective harmony with a strong-playing Vikings offensive line.

QB Ben Holmes accumulated 259 passing yards. Holmes and Nico Hrouda, who played in the fourth quarter, connected with a total of nine different receivers.

On course for the playoffs

The Vikings laid the foundation for their success in the first quarter and continuously extended their lead throughout the game.

Even though Berlin Thunder managed to make their presence felt at times, the visitors maintained control in decisive moments and comfortably secured the lead.

The controlled interplay across all three phases of the ball was once again particularly convincing. While the offense impressed with explosive plays and efficient ball movement, the defense ensured Berlin never truly got into the game with important sacks, interceptions, and turnovers.

As the only undefeated team out of the eight AFLE teams, the Viennese are getting closer to a spot in the semifinals. Next up is a home game against Paris Lights on Saturday (July 11). Tickets are available via ÖTicket.
