VSV Boss Demands Reforms: "The Arms Race Must Stop"
Martin Winkler views the league's economic development critically and warns of the consequences. Additionally, VSV threatens to cancel the outdoor derby.
VSV is sounding the alarm ahead of the new season's start.
Managing Director Martin Winkler is demanding far-reaching reforms in the win2day ICE Hockey League and warning of the economic consequences of the ongoing "arms race" between clubs. "This has to stop," he insists.
In an interview with the "Kleine Zeitung," Winkler explains that six Austrian clubs have joined forces to draw attention to existing grievances.
"Massive Imbalance"
While there is a clear commitment to the league's international character, the general conditions are not the same for all teams.
As examples, the VSV Managing Director cites league newcomer HC Milano, which relies on numerous imports or naturalized players, as well as the Hungarian clubs, which, according to Winkler, have significantly lower costs.
"There's a massive imbalance there," says the 45-year-old.
Salary Model as a Possible Solution
To ensure greater equality of opportunity, the group of six Austrian clubs has already submitted a catalog of measures to the league.
One idea is the introduction of a points system based on player salaries. For this, contracts would have to be disclosed, categorized into salary brackets, and scored accordingly.
The proposals are to be discussed at a management meeting at the end of August. While Winkler does not expect immediate decisions, he is calling for a fundamental debate about the league's economic future.
Otherwise, he fears that "one or two clubs could collapse in the medium term," as almost happened this year with the Pioneers Vorarlberg.
VSV Threatens to Cancel Outdoor Derby
Winkler also has strong words regarding the planned outdoor derby against KAC in Bischofshofen. VSV has been waiting for weeks for feedback from the league regarding a compensation package for subscribers and the club itself.
Should the demands – including adequate compensation for season ticket holders and the assumption of additional transport and hotel costs – not be met, VSV will draw consequences.
"If the compensation package does not meet our expectations, we will not host our home game in Bischofshofen, but as usual in the Villach Stadthalle," Winkler announced.
