Born in Germany: ÖSV Downhill Skier Explains Nationality Question
Despite his birthplace, there were never any "recruitment attempts" from the DSV, says Stefan Babinsky.
With Super-G podium finishes in Wengen and Kitzbühel, the past World Cup season was not unsuccessful for Stefan Babinsky.
At the Olympic Games, however, his results were rather disappointing, with ranks 26 (downhill) and 21 (Super-G).
"I had set myself high goals and hoped for a lot. Perhaps too much. But I have learned from it," explains Babinsky in an interview with "Krone".
At Home in Seckau, Born in Bremen
Currently, the Styrian skier is preparing for the upcoming season. Babinsky has recharged his batteries for the new season at home in Seckau.
Incidentally, the 30-year-old speed specialist was not born in Austria at all, but in Germany - more precisely in Bremen.
No "Recruitment Attempts" from Germany
"It's a very short story: my dad was a pilot for Lufthansa and completed his training there, while our house was being built in Seckau," clarifies the ÖSV skier. At the age of two, he returned to Austria.
The ÖSV doesn't need to worry that Babinsky would ever compete for Germany in the World Cup. "But there were never any recruitment attempts from the Germans," he laughs.
Babinsky Wants to Show More
For the new season, he shows an attacking spirit. Among other things, his goal is naturally his first World Cup victory: "Even if I'm no longer the youngest at 30, I know that there's still a lot more in me that I want to show!"
