Colombia are in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The South Americans confidently defeated Ghana 1-0 in the last Round of 32 match, thus securing the final remaining Round of 16 ticket.

For Ghana, however, a surprising World Cup run comes to an end. The "Black Stars" miss out on their first victory in a World Cup knockout match since their historic quarter-final appearance in 2010. The elimination is particularly bitter for veteran coach Carlos Queiroz, who managed Colombia's national team between 2019 and 2020 and now loses out precisely against his former employer.

Arias Puts the Favorites Ahead

Ghana started bravely, making an early statement with a long-range shot from Thomas Partey just seconds into the game, but Colombia gradually took control thereafter.

After a strong combination, the deserved lead finally came. Daniel Munoz sent Luis Suarez through, whose sharp cross initially whizzed past Luis Diaz, but Jhon Arias was perfectly positioned at the back post and slotted home in the 14th minute, sending Lawrence Ati Zigi the wrong way to make it 1-0.

The goalscorer was lucky to still be on the pitch. Just two minutes earlier, Arias had only received a yellow card for a hard tackle on Inaki Williams.

Ati Zigi Prevents a Larger Deficit

Colombia remained the clearly superior side and created numerous further opportunities before halftime. Luis Diaz was first denied by Ati Zigi with a long-range shot (20'), before the attacker pushed the ball just past the left post after a fortunate touch (39').

Luis Suarez also missed a header (42'), while Ghana struggled to create any attacking momentum. Daniel Munoz thwarted the Africans' best chance with a strong tackle against Antoine Semenyo (44').

Just before halftime, Ati Zigi even prevented the long-overdue 2-0 with a brilliant save against Johan Mojica (45'+1).

Diaz Frustrated by Ati Zigi

The situation remained unchanged after the break. Richard Rios, who came on at halftime, immediately made his presence felt with a dangerous shot (48'), before Gustavo Puerta forced Ati Zigi into another diving save with a spectacular curling effort (55').

Just a minute later, Colombia already celebrated a supposed 2-0 lead, but Luis Diaz was narrowly offside when he scored. Shortly thereafter, the attacking star missed another clear-cut chance completely free in front of Ati Zigi (58').

The Ghanaian goalkeeper kept his team in the game until the end with further saves against Davinson Sanchez (81') and a long-range shot from substitute Juan Quintero (84') that went just wide.

Switzerland Awaits in the Round of 16

Ghana offered far too little offensively throughout the 90 minutes to seriously trouble the favorites. Colombia ultimately saw out their highly deserved 1-0 victory confidently, with their only criticism being their poor chance conversion.

The "Cafeteros" thus reach the World Cup Round of 16 for the fourth time in their history. On Tuesday (10:00 PM CEST), they will face Switzerland in Vancouver for a place in the quarter-finals.
