Kimmich after goal: "It was very emotional for me"
Joshua Kimmich scores in Bayern's victory against Mainz and dedicates his goal to his late father. After the match, he speaks about an emotional moment.
FC Bayern Munich celebrated a 2-1 away win against FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday. German midfielder Joshua Kimmich scored the opening goal of the match.
For Kimmich, the long-range strike under the crossbar was a particularly emotional goal. After the ball hit the back of the net, the German ran towards the corner flag and pointed his index finger to the sky.
"Today, of course, it was on my mind straight away"
Kimmich was thinking of a very specific person: "Because of everything with my dad, it was very emotional for me," the 31-year-old said after the game in an interview with DAZN.
He added: "Usually I don't score many goals, but today, of course, I thought about it right away."
Following the death of his father at the end of October, Kimmich had missed three competitive matches. Last weekend, the Bayern player returned to the pitch against Dortmund.
"At the moment, being on the pitch is actually the hardest phase," Kimmich offered an insight into his emotional state. He explained that he thinks a lot about his father especially while playing, "because football gave us such a strong bond. That's why it was very emotional today."
