After Thrashing: Pressure Mounts on Leipzig Coach Demichelis
The Argentine only arrived in Leipzig this summer. At the latest after the disastrous performance in Munich, the pressure is now on.
Expectations and reality are currently far apart again at RB Leipzig!
The "Red Bulls" have had a mixed start to both the German Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.
Criticism of coach Martin Demichelis, who was installed in Leipzig this summer as Ole Werner's successor, as the last official act by DFB national team coach Jürgen Klopp, is growing.
Away Weakness
Above all, the at times disastrous away performances are now proving to be the Argentine's undoing. While the club clearly won all four home games so far (goal difference: 15:0), they suffered four painful defeats away from home (goal difference 3:15). Most recently, 1:6 against FC Bayern.
On Wednesday, the Champions League takes them to the Bernabeu against Real Madrid of all places. After that, must-win games await. As the "kicker" reports, three victories are needed against promoted teams Elversberg and Schalke, as well as in the cup in Essen, to "combat the increasing doubts about his suitability."
Should this not succeed, the former Bayern defender could already be with his back against the wall. The demands at RB Leipzig are too high.
The Problems are Big
There was also criticism regarding the lineup and attitude in Munich. Demichelis surprisingly started Lukas Klostermann at right-back. For the veteran, it was his first start in months.
The German was completely overwhelmed, and RB conceded four of the first five goals from his side.
Regarding attitude, "Bild" chief reporter Yvonne Gabriel told "Sport1": "Demichelis always talks about passion and intensity. And I don't see any of that."
Furthermore, communication in the dressing room is said to be an increasing problem.
"Baumi" Missed, Seiwald Sidelined
ÖFB stalwart Nicolas Seiwald also has a difficult time under the new coach. Under Werner, he was an absolute regular starter, but recently he has been on the bench five times in a row.
Meanwhile, compatriot Christoph Baumgartner continues to be missed. However, the attacking player could make his comeback against Elversberg >>>
Nagelsmann as an Alternative?
Already during the international break, there were initial rumors about an early end to Demichelis's tenure in Leipzig. The name of ex-coach Julian Nagelsmann also came up in the discussion.
However, Roger Schmidt, Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, immediately cleared up the speculations and backed Demichelis.
