Record fee! Danso's competitor leaves Tottenham
A seasoned centre-back leaves Tottenham Hotspur. Austrian national team player Kevin Danso thus loses a direct competitor.
The next major Premier League transfer is confirmed: Centre-back Cristian Romero is leaving Tottenham Hotspur and joining Atlético Madrid.
The Argentine 2022 World Champion signs with the "Rojiblancos" until 2031.
Advantage for Danso?
According to consistent media reports, up to 40 million euros, including bonuses, will flow to London. This makes Romero the most expensive defender in Atlético Madrid's club history.
Austrian national team player Kevin Danso also benefits from the move. With Romero, the 27-year-old loses a direct competitor in the Spurs' defence, which should give him better chances for regular playing time.
Defensive logjam
The Londoners have already signed two new centre-backs this summer with Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi.
Romero initially moved to Tottenham on loan from Atalanta in 2021, before the English club signed him permanently a year later. Overall, the 28-year-old made over 100 competitive appearances for the "Spurs" and was one of the key defensive players for years.
