New Transfer Record: Spurs Pay 99 Million to Relegated Club
The Portuguese, who is not in the World Cup squad, is unlikely to remain Tottenham Hotspur's record signing for long, however.
Mateus Fernandes smashes the Spurs' transfer record!
The Portuguese is moving from Premier League relegated side West Ham United to London, as Tottenham Hotspur reports. According to reports, the London club is paying 99 million euros for the central midfielder.
This makes Fernandes the most expensive new signing in the club's history. Previously, Xavi Simons (65 million euros in summer 2025) held the top spot.
Two Relegations in a Row, Sidelined by Portugal
The 21-year-old did not make it into Roberto Martinez's Portuguese World Cup squad.
Despite relegation with West Ham, he still proved himself capable of bigger challenges – for the second time in a row, by the way. In 2025, he was relegated with Southampton and then moved to the "Hammers".
No One is Spending More Currently
The Spurs spent more money this summer than any other club. So far, they have bought players for 159 million euros, but only brought in nine million euros.
However, the transfer offensive is not yet over: With Sandro Tonali (for probably 108 million euros), the next record signing is at the gates.
