60 Million! World Cup Shooting Star Sets New Transfer Record
The Swiss player's impending move to the Premier League will bring SC Freiburg a record transfer fee.
Johan Manzambi is on the verge of a move to Newcastle United.
According to consistent media reports, the "Magpies" and SC Freiburg have agreed on a transfer. Only the final details with the player's side still need to be clarified.
According to "Sky," the transfer package amounts to 60 million Euros. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Freiburg will receive this sum as a fixed fee, with further bonuses potentially added.
Two Records
Manzambi will thus become the new record transfer for the Breisgau club. Kevin Schade (Brentford) and Merlin Röhl (Everton) had each brought the German Bundesliga club 25 million Euros.
The 20-year-old also replaces Granit Xhaka as Switzerland's record departure; the national team captain brought Borussia Mönchengladbach 45 million Euros when he moved to FC Arsenal in the summer of 2016.
Fit Again for Argentina?
Manzambi's focus is currently still on the World Cup, where he has played a significant role in the Swiss national team's successful run with three goals and two assists. The "Nati" will face reigning champions Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday (3:00 AM).
However, the shooting star is expected to miss that match. A knee injury already sidelined him against Colombia, and afterwards, head coach Murat Yakin did not believe that Switzerland's top scorer in the tournament would be fit in time.
