Sensation! Fourth-tier side knocks Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup
The underdog shows better nerves in the penalty shootout and topples the reigning English champions. The upset was brewing early on.
Fleetwood Town achieves a stunning upset in the Carabao Cup! The fourth-tier side dumps the reigning English champions, Arsenal FC, out of the cup competition. After the hosts took an early lead, the decision came down to a penalty shootout.
The fourth-tier team was under intense pressure for the entire match, but the underdog converted their first concrete scoring opportunity in the first half into a lead. Following a pass into the centre, Loupalo-Bi shielded the ball expertly, got into position, and buried the ball low into the right corner (21').
Lynch denied the "Gunners'" best chance in the first half from Gyökeres with a strong save (30').
Summer signing misses from the spot
In the second half, Mikel Arteta's team stepped up the pace and was rewarded with the equaliser. After a cross from O'Neill, Gyökeres poked the ball over the line (50'). Dowman could have added another straight away, but Lynch once again successfully thwarted a goal (55').
Shortly before the end of regular time, the youngster made another inglorious appearance, earning a straight red card for kicking Neal who was on the ground (88').
In the penalty shootout, all of the first three takers scored. Cannon, Fleetwood Town's fourth taker, also held his nerve, while Guimarães on the opposing side was denied by Lynch. Haughey, as the fifth taker, made no mistake and buried the match-winning penalty to seal the sensation.
