Senft and KSC Lose Austrian Duel in DFB-Pokal
Austrian international Kevin Stöger emerges victorious from the Austrian duel. For another Austrian international, it's a debacle.
Maximilian Senft and Karlsruher SC had to concede a 2-0 defeat against Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. For the "Fohlen" (Foals), Kevin Stöger was on the pitch for the entire match.
After just seven minutes, the hosts took the lead: The Bundesliga team combined their way forward from their own defense, Scally perfectly laid the ball across the box, allowing Hack to tap it in (7'). Wanitzek almost had an immediate response, but Fukuda's pass was not precise enough, forcing the KSC captain to lay it off again, and Egloff finished the move from distance (9').
Sander Sent Off After VAR Review
Further clear chances failed to materialize afterwards, but shortly before halftime, a foul by Sander caused a stir. Fukuda turned past Sander and threatened to escape him, leading Sander to tackle and bring the Japanese player down.
Initially, referee Florian Lechner decided on a yellow card, but the VAR sent him to the monitor, and after reviewing the images, he showed the Gladbach captain a straight red (39'). He also agreed that it was a professional foul (denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity).
However, the red card had no consequences, as Gladbach successfully countered shortly after the break, and after some fine interplay between Hack and Ullrich, the latter made it 2-0 (49'). KSC attacked tirelessly, but on this evening, creative moments in attack were lacking. Their best chance came from a corner, but Eichinger's header went just over the goal (77'). Thus, it remained 2-0 for the "Fohlen", who thereby took the next step out of their crisis.
Querfeld Slips Into Debacle with Union
Leopold Querfeld experienced a catastrophic evening, as his Union Berlin side was thrashed 5-0 by 1. FC Köln. After a balanced opening phase, the hosts increasingly took control. El Mala secured the lead before halftime (32').
After the break, Maina (52'), El Mala again (60'), Johannesson (79'), and Sebulonsen (88') ensured a decisive scoreline.
