Kitzbühel traditionally honors its ski legends with their own gondola on the Hahnenkamm – but during the festive unveiling for Giovanni Franzoni, a peculiar mishap occurred.

Wrong Flag on the Gondola

On the personalized gondola of the Italian downhill winner, the national flag was mistakenly affixed horizontally instead of vertically. The normally vertical stripes of the Tricolore thus appeared in an unusual horizontal format.

However, the 25-year-old speed specialist took the design error with humor and showed true wit: For the official press photos, he promptly held a correct Italian flag in front of the logo and simply grinned away the faux pas.

Despite the minor mix-up, the Kitzbühel winner speaks in the highest terms of the organizers:

“I want to express a huge thank you to all of you here in Kitzbühel. What you put together for us here year after year is magnificent. The race is and remains something special for all of us.”

A Historic Ride on the Streif

OC head Michael Huber symbolically doffs his hat on stage to the likeable Italian: "Unbelievable. The 1:52.31 was the second fastest time ever recorded on the Streif."

Franzoni visibly enjoys his day of honor on the Hahnenkamm.

"Today is a very special day, and it brings back the emotions and memories from the winter. It was an incredible winter. I am very proud to be here today. Thank you for the kind words I've received here, and thank you to my fans who accompanied me today."
