ÖSV Star Scheib: "I want to make a fresh start"

Julia Scheib was the outstanding giant slalom skier last season, but she wants to put that out of her mind before the 2026/27 season opener. However, a defeat from last winter still haunts her.

Almost exactly one year ago to the day, Julia Scheib surprised everyone – with her first World Cup victory at the season opener in Sölden.

It was the beginning of an impressive winning streak that culminated in her claiming the small crystal globe in giant slalom.

The Styrian athlete won almost everything in her core alpine discipline last season. Almost.

However, at the Olympic Games, the gold favorite couldn't live up to her role; a mistaken radio message from her coaches cost her a medal chance. She missed out on a medal by seven hundredths of a second.

This – in quotation marks – defeat still resonates eight months later.

"It keeps popping up"

"I would have wished for it to be different. But you learn more from a defeat than from a victory. Nevertheless, it's still a bit inside me. It keeps popping up," Scheib admits when asked by LAOLA1.

The fact that she couldn't seize the chance for an Olympic medal, which is a rare opportunity in most athletes' careers, preoccupied the winner of five World Cup giant slaloms throughout the summer. More, perhaps, than she would have liked.

"Of course, in a season where you win a lot, you always want more and more. But I don't want to be too hard on myself because so much went well last season, and only that one thing didn't," says Scheib.

"Continue where I left off"

The 28-year-old doesn't want to dwell too much on the past anyway.

"I am grateful for what happened last season. But that's in the past. I want to block that out and make a fresh start," she announces regarding the season opener in Sölden.

Scheib is looking forward to the first race of the winter on the Rettenbach Glacier with a positive outlook, even if she doesn't know exactly where she stands compared to her competitors.

"Of course, I want to pick up where I left off. From a feeling perspective, the preparation has been good so far," Scheib reveals.

In der Vergangenheit habe ich schon eine Woche gebraucht, bis der Körper ready war, bis das Mindset ready war, um wieder Gas zu geben. Das war diesmal relativ schnell wieder da.

Scheib über die Saison-Vorbereitung

During this period, she consciously listened to her body and tried not to overdo it. With success.

"In Ushuaia (at the preparation camp; editor's note), the feeling was immediately back on the first and second days of skiing. In the past, it used to take me a week for my body to be ready, for my mindset to be ready to push again. This time, it was back relatively quickly," Scheib reports.

Full Program in Super-G as well

It seems everything is set for a successful start to the season. Scheib makes no secret of her goals: "Of course, I want to win every time I'm at the start. That is priority number one."

In addition to her signature discipline, giant slalom, Scheib also intends to compete in all Super-Gs this upcoming season. The training volume on the longer skis was accordingly increased during preparation.

The conditions for a similarly successful winter as last year certainly seem to be in place for Julia Scheib. The globe winner continues to work in an environment where she feels comfortable: "That's the most important thing for me."
