In Comeback: Serena Williams Defeated in Generational Clash
Williams showed herself on par with a 20-year-old for a long time, but still lost.
Serena Williams' comeback at Wimbledon was not crowned with success.
The 44-year-old had to admit defeat to Australian Maya Joint (20) in three sets with 3:6, 7:6 (6), 3:6.
Williams showed good form from the start in her singles return, having the first two break opportunities of the match, but failed to convert them. Instead, Joint secured the decisive break in the first set at 3:4.
Williams Fights Back
In the second set, Joint immediately broke again, also at 3:3.
Williams managed to re-break twice and also fended off four break points – but it went to a tiebreak. There, the veteran first saved a match point and finally clinched the set.
Joint Prevails
In the deciding set, Williams broke for 2:1, but immediately dropped her serve in return. Joint broke again for 2:4 and sealed the match with her second match point in the third set.
After a total playing time of 2:25 hours, Joint advances to the next round, while Williams' comeback ends in the first round.
