Lilli Tagger fails to reach Wimbledon second round
The 18-year-old played an evenly matched game for a long time, but the start of the third set proved to be her undoing.
Lilli Tagger (ATP-82.)'s run in the first round of the grass-court classic at Wimbledon comes to an end against Lanlana Tararudee (WTA-99.). She loses to the Thai player 6:7(3), 7:5, 4:6.
Neither player could secure a break in the first set. Right in the first game, Tagger failed to convert two break points, but she also fended off two break opportunities from her opponent during the set. In the tie-break, Tararudee seized her first set point and prevailed 7:3.
Fateful Phase in the Third Set
In the second set, both players also showed themselves to be evenly matched, holding their service games without offering a single break chance. It was only with the last ball played in the set that Tagger broke – leveling the match at 1-1.
However, the 18-year-old couldn't carry that momentum forward. In the deciding set, she immediately conceded two breaks. Tagger managed to save Tararudee's first match point, and with her third break opportunity, she narrowed the score to 5:3. After saving two more match points, however, Tagger's journey ended after a total playing time of 2 hours and 42 minutes.
