At the ATP Challenger in Villena, Joel Schwärzler lost to Jack Pinnington Jones from Great Britain (ATP No. 205) in the round of 16 with a score of 1:6 and 3:6.

The ÖTV talent struggled to find his rhythm from the start of the match. After having to concede his serve twice, he took a medical timeout at 1:4. The tournament doctor then attempted to treat his hitting arm. However, Schwärzler did not win another game in that set.

The 20-year-old's performance did not improve as the match progressed. Although he managed to take a 2:0 lead, he lost momentum and fell behind again. His British opponent ultimately converted his second match point after 1:16 hours to win 6:3.

Next Gen Finals within Reach

Despite the defeat, Schwärzler remains on track for Next Gen Finals qualification. The best eight players of the year aged up to 20 are eligible to participate in this tournament.

The Vorarlberg native is currently ranked sixth in this standing. However, his points cushion has become somewhat tighter due to the round of 16 exit.

The Next Gen Race is currently led by top players Rafael Jodar from Spain and Joao Fonseca from Brazil.
