Mensur Suljovic caused a sensation at the Swiss Darts Open in Basel.

The 54-year-old Viennese defeated three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen 6-4 in legs in the second round. This means Suljovic has won his last four encounters against the Dutchman since the 2022 World Championship.

Suljovic managed a break in the very first leg, then extended his lead to 2-0 with a 138 checkout shortly after. Van Gerwen fought his way back with two consecutive leg wins, but the Austrian broke his throw again to make it 4-2.

Another break to make it 5-2 was the decisive moment, although van Gerwen was still able to reduce the deficit to 5-4. Finally, Suljovic checked out on double 10, securing the victory with an average of over 91 points.

In the round of 16 (Sunday, 2:30 PM), Suljovic will face 12th seed Ross Smith from England.
