The readmission of Russia by the international Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship has caused quite a stir.

As a clear signal against this decision, the Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation initially announced a boycott of games against Russia on Tuesday (all info >>>).

This is partly as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine, against which Russia is waging an aggressive war, and partly due to concerns regarding their own security. Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Latvia also joined throughout the day.

"There's Still Time Until the World Championship"

The ÖEHV also commented on its further course of action in a statement.

"The position of the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation remains unchanged: We clearly reject Russia's return. As long as the war of aggression against Ukraine continues, Russia has no place in international championships," the federation announced.

"We stand behind the decision of Finland and Norway and are currently examining whether the European nations will collectively join a boycott. There is no law in Austria like the one in Latvia, but security-relevant concerns also exist for us," the statement continued.

A boycott is not ruled out, and discussions with authorities are ongoing. "The situation is dynamic, and there's still time until the World Championship."
