Ice Hockey: Norway boycotts games against Russia
Following the CAS decision to re-admit Russia, the Norwegian federation takes a clear stance.
Norway will not compete against Russia at the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship.
The Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation announced this via an official statement on Tuesday morning. The federation had already informed the international federation IIHF on Monday.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) had previously granted the Russian ice hockey team participation in the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship last Friday (all info >>>).
Solidarity with Ukraine
"Our position that Russia should be excluded from all international competitions as long as the war in Ukraine continues remains unchanged," the official statement reads.
Furthermore, the Norwegian federation also has concerns regarding its own security.
Federation speaks of "significant security risks"
"This decision is based on our responsibility to protect the safety and well-being of our players, team members, and their families," the federation states, clearly backing its staff.
"We believe that a game against Russia under the current circumstances could expose our players and staff to significant security risks. Therefore, their mental health, well-being, and personal safety are our top priority."
The 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship is scheduled to take place in May in the German cities of Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, and Mannheim.
