Captain of World Cup Sensation Team Accused of Rape
A Brazilian interpreter has made serious allegations against the 36-year-old. Police are investigating.
As captain, Ryan Mendes surprisingly led World Cup newcomer Cape Verde into the knockout phase. However, the 36-year-old is now facing serious allegations.
A Brazilian translator reports a sexual assault that allegedly occurred during a friendly match trip to New Zealand in March. The Brazilian news channel "Globo" has made the allegations public.
New Zealand Police Investigating Since April
According to reports, Mendes allegedly forced his way into the interpreter's hotel room and choked, hit, bit, and sexually assaulted her. Police have photographs of injuries to her mouth, neck, and leg. Investigations have been ongoing since April. The presumption of innocence applies.
According to media reports, the woman initially approached at least three officials of the Cape Verdean Football Federation, who reportedly did not react. Neither the Cape Verdean Football Federation nor Mendes himself have commented on the allegations to date.
Meanwhile, a few hours after the allegations became public on Sunday, FIFA issued a statement. The world governing body is in contact with New Zealand authorities and takes the allegations "extremely seriously".
