Shortly after Round of 16 exit: Prominent departure for Portugal
Head coach Robert Martinez confirms his departure shortly after the match against Spain.
The Portuguese national team will get a new head coach.
This was confirmed by the current coach, Roberto Martinez, shortly after their Round of 16 exit against Spain.
"It is certain that this is my last game for Portugal. I want to thank the Portuguese people. I take with me a memory that will stay with me for a lifetime," the coach is quoted by the Portuguese sports newspaper "A Bola".
"We haven't spoken"
The Spaniard's contract expires at the end of July 2026. It had previously been suspected that Martinez would not extend it.
However, the coach had not yet informed federation president Pedro Proença of the decision. "We haven't spoken to each other, but it's the end of a cycle," said Martinez.
