After World Cup Exit: Riyad Mahrez Announces Retirement
The Algeria star scored a brace against Austria. A few days later, he declares his retirement from the national team.
Riyad Mahrez (35) is ending his career with the Algerian national team.
The 119-cap international announced this to "beIN Sports" after Algeria's 0-2 defeat against Switzerland.
Mahrez is the Algerian with the second most national team appearances, behind Aissa Mandi (34, 122 caps). Furthermore, he is also the nation's second-highest goalscorer (40 goals).
Mahrez ironically scored his last international goal against Austria. In the final group stage match, he scored twice; his brief 3-2 go-ahead goal in the 90+3rd minute, in particular, will likely remain in many fans' memories.
