Following the World Cup exit, head coach Sebastian Beccacece resigns. "Today it's time to say goodbye to a wonderful family," the 45-year-old is quoted as saying.

In the round of 16, they had to concede a 0-2 defeat to Mexico, after previously celebrating a sensational 2-1 victory in their last group stage match against Germany.

Contract Not Extended

"We did not manage to achieve our goal – namely to play the best World Cup in Ecuador's history," the head coach stated. His now-ending contract will not be extended.

Not everything went smoothly within the team either. In the last defeat, Piero Hincapié, who received a red card for a handball, refused to shake hands with Beccacece. The reason for this is currently unclear.

The 45-year-old had been in office since 2024. He qualified for the World Cup with Ecuador as runners-up. The team went eleven consecutive games without a defeat.
