After Canada, Mexico is the next co-host to reach the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Mexicans won 2-0 against Ecuador in their own capital. The match had to be kicked off an hour later than planned due to a thunderstorm.

The hosts took command from the start, with Raul Jiménez first threatening with a header (7').

After Ecuador's first notable attacking move – Enner Valencia's shot hitting the outside of the post (18') – Julian Quinnones made it 1-0: following a quick build-up, the Saudi-based player cut inside and fired the ball into the top corner (22').

After a misplaced pass by the Ecuadorians in their own half, Quinones turned provider: Raul Jiménez, unchallenged in the middle, also shone with a superb finish to make it 2-0 (31'). It was a deserved half-time score.

Waiting for England

After the change of ends, Ecuador found their way into the game a bit better and had more possession, but struggled to create space.

Mexico had the best chance again when captain Cesar Montes forced goalkeeper Hernan Galindez into a strong save (66').

In the final phase, Mexico allowed their opponents to come forward, but the South Americans failed to score. In stoppage time, Arsenal defender Piero Hincapié was shown a red card for a handball.

Mexico will – again at the Estadio Azteca – face England or DR Congo in the Round of 16.
