Death threats! Colombia's Campaz does not return home
The Colombian missed a big chance for the winning goal in the round of 16. The case evokes memories of a brutal murder after the 1994 World Cup.
The Colombian Football Federation has made public and strongly condemned death threats against national player Jaminton Campaz and his family following the team's World Cup exit.
"No athlete and no member of their immediate circle should be subjected to intimidation simply for representing their country in sport," read a statement.
Campaz had missed the chance for the winning goal in extra time during the round of 16 defeat against Switzerland.
As reported by "One Football", the 25-year-old striker has decided not to return to his home country for the time being, due to safety concerns.
Tragedy of Andrés Escobar
In Colombia, people are particularly sensitive to such threats: During the 1994 World Cup, also in the USA, defender Andrés Escobar scored an own goal in the 1-2 defeat against the host team.
Days after the team was eliminated and had returned home, Escobar was murdered in Medellín. The act caused global outrage.
