Captain of ÖFB duo ends national team career
The 33-year-old brings an end to his time with the Swiss national team. In Mainz, he remains captain of Phillipp Mwene and Stefan Posch.
Silvan Widmer is ending his career with the Swiss national team. The Swiss Football Association officially announced this on Monday.
The 33-year-old played a total of 65 international matches for the "Nati" and scored four goals. During his national team career, the right-back participated in two European Championships (2021, 2024) and two World Cups (2022, 2026).
At the 2026 World Cup, Widmer and Switzerland experienced a special success. The "Nati" sensationally advanced to the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by Argentina.
Focus on Mainz
Widmer, who has been playing for Mainz 05 since 2021, wants to concentrate exclusively on his club in the future. There, the 33-year-old wears the captain's armband and, among others, leads the two ÖFB legionnaires Phillipp Mwene and Stefan Posch onto the field.
"Even though I will miss the emotions and the Nati environment, I feel that it is the right moment to focus solely on the club and to allow my body more breaks," Widmer explains his decision.
With this, the Swiss national team loses one of its key players.
