Vini Jr. Sees Red After 19 Minutes in Real Victory
The "Royal Ones" long struggled against the visitors from Villarreal, but then it's Vini's replacement Diomande, of all people, who scores the decisive goal.
In the 8th round of the Spanish La Liga, Real Madrid defeated Villarreal 1-0 at home.
As early as the 6th minute of play, Real Madrid threatened the goal of former Salzburg keeper Peter Gulasci. Mbappe, after an assist from Güler and Carreras, only hit the post.
In the 22nd minute, Trent Alexander-Arnold sent the French striker through with a long, high ball. The Frenchman dribbled past the last defender but was denied by Gulasci.
Diomande Scores His First Goal
Even at the start of the second half, the "Royal Ones" struggled to break through the visitors' defensive wall.
Jose Morinho reacted and brought on Vini Jr. in the 52nd minute, who the Portuguese coach had not started.
In the 62nd minute, Yan Diomande scored to give Real Madrid the lead. Valverde threaded the ball through to the Ivorian, who appeared completely alone in front of Gulasci and only had to slot it into the far corner.
Vini Jr. Sent Off
Such is the fine line between joy and sorrow in football. In the 70th minute, Vini Jr. celebrated his goal, Moriniho sprinted to his star player and embraced him, but then the VAR intervened.
In the build-up to the goal, Vini Jr. pulled his opponent Nathan Saliba's hair. The refereeing team ruled it as violent conduct and sent the Brazilian off with a straight red card after 19 minutes.
With the win, Real can reduce the gap to Barcelona back to 6 points and now stands at 18 points. Villarreal remains in 10th place in La Liga with 8 points.
