The Argentine national team has a new captain!

Following the retirement of superstar Lionel Messi, centre-back Cristian Romero takes over the armband from "La Pulga". This was confirmed by Argentina national coach Lionel Scaloni.

Messi himself will play for the "Albiceleste" one very last time on October 6 in a friendly match against Benin.

Romero Logical Successor

With 58 international caps, Romero is one of the most experienced players in Scaloni's squad. In 2022, the 28-year-old Atletico Madrid defender became a World Cup winner with the national team. In addition to two Copa América victories, a Europa League triumph also adorns his trophy cabinet.

Romero also possesses proven leadership qualities. At Tottenham Hotspur, he was captain of Austrian national team player Kevin Danso for a period between 2023 and 2026.

In Messi's absence, the €50-million man had already served as vice-captain three times in 2025.

However, "Cuti" Romero will now make his debut as official captain precisely in his hometown of Cordoba. There, the reigning vice-world champions will host Bolivia in a friendly match next Wednesday (22:00 in the LIVE-ticker).
