FC Basel is on the hunt for a new head coach following the dismissal of Stephan Lichtsteiner.

The club of Austrian international Flavius Daniliuc had recently been in a slump, and after three consecutive winless league games, the club decided to pull the plug.

After former Austria coach Nenad Bjelica was also linked as a possible successor, Sandro Wagner has now emerged as a new hot candidate for the coaching position.

Wagner in the Spotlight

As "Bild" reports, the 38-year-old is said to be on the list at the traditional Swiss club. "Kicker" had also previously linked Wagner with FC Basel.

Wagner has been without a club since his dismissal from FC Augsburg in December 2025. His tenure with the German Bundesliga club ended after just 14 games. Previously, the former German international had worked, among other things, as assistant coach to Julian Nagelsmann at the DFB.

Wagner gained his first experience as a head coach in youth football. He later took over the senior team at SpVgg Unterhaching and led the club to the 3. Liga in 2023.

For now, assistant coach Luigi Nocentini is to manage the team at FC Basel. After seven matchdays, FCB is in fifth place in the Swiss Super League with ten points.
