"I'm Available" - World Champion Ready for DFB Office
Per Mertesacker offers his services to the German Football Association. But there's a catch.
Will a 2014 World Champion return to the DFB?
As Per Mertesacker (41) clarified on "ZDF," he is available for a position at the German Football Association.
"To somehow work at the DFB, to give back something to German football, to which I owe so much, if that is desired – I am of course available for that," said the current TV expert.
The Catch
However, the former Arsenal professional, who led the "Gunners'" youth academy from 2018 until the end of June 2026, does not want to start immediately. After the World Cup, he plans to take a break.
"What I also wanted to do after 15 years at FC Arsenal, eight years in their academy, is to reflect on the time and everything I experienced there," he says.
The role of sporting director would most likely be an option for the 41-year-old. This position is currently held by Rudi Völler, who has a contract until 2028. Philipp Lahm, by the way, emphasized that he does not currently see himself at the DFB.
