Austrian National Team Player Receives Special Praise from His Coach
The 28-year-old attacking player leads the German Bundesliga's scorer list. According to his coach, he has probably never been in such good form at club level.
Austrian international Marco Grüll is increasingly becoming an absolute difference-maker for SV Werder Bremen.
The 28-year-old attacking player leads the German Bundesliga's scorer list with two goals and four assists, alongside Bayern superstar Michael Olise. As a reward for his strong performances with the Hanseatics, he was called up to the Austrian national team for the first time since November 2025.
Following the last matchday, where he initiated the turnaround with his goal for the interim 1:2 against Augsburg, head coach Daniel Thioune did not hold back praise for the former Rapid player. He "deservedly became player of the match," said the 52-year-old, after Grüll also contributed two assists in the 3:2 victory against FCA.
Grüll has "momentum on his side"
"He is always perceived as a squad player," Thioune explained the 28-year-old's standing within the club: "One is always glad that he works diligently, that he adheres to tactical instructions, and that he is fundamentally always reliable – but no footballer wants to hear that about himself."
The demand "that he can now also show the qualities he possesses" has paid off and further brought his potential to light. In an attacking role, he can now play to his strengths more often. "I don't know if we have ever seen Marco Grüll in better form at Werder Bremen," praises Thioune.
Now he has "momentum on his side." Whether he can play a key role in the Austrian national team remains to be seen. Grüll himself, at least, declared: "I want to keep going like this."
