Grüll After Gala vs. Augsburg: "We Already Looked Like the Losers"

A sold-out Weser-Stadion and a jubilant Marco Grüll right in the thick of it – a sight that ÖFB national team coach Ralf Rangnick would likely also appreciate.

The 28-year-old Austrian international was one of the architects of Werder's victory over Augsburg on Saturday (for the match report>>>). It was a goal by the Austrian in the 66th minute that initiated the spectacular comeback when the score was 0-2.

And it was to get even better: Grüll also provided the assists for Niclas Füllkrug's 2-2 equalizer and Mitchell Weiser's 3-2 winning goal in stoppage time, with Weiser becoming the match-winner in only his second game after a long injury layoff.

Goosebumps for the Coach

"There is no better example of a resilient team. A compliment to the team – what happened here today was incredible," praised coach Daniel Thioune to the club's own channels.

The coach particularly highlighted Weiser's goal. "That was a goosebumps moment." Weiser himself stated that it had been difficult "to put the emotions into words." And he also knew who he had to thank. "It was a strong ball from Grüllo that led to my goal," he praised his teammate.

Weiser: "We Are on a Good Path"

"We already looked like the losers," Grüll himself admitted. "But we came back, played entirely for the win, and weren't satisfied with just a point," he emphasized, highlighting Bremen's mentality.

They could also once again rely on their own supporters, who spurred the team to the late victory. "Moments like today are special. If 42,000 people believe in something, the probability of achieving it is higher than if only eleven do. That was the case again today," Füllkrug thanked the fans.

Grüll and Werder on a Good Path

However, moments like these should not remain a flash in the pan. "We continue to work on making things like this happen more often. And I think we are on a good path," Weiser stated, setting the course for the coming weeks.

Grüll is also on a good path; after five games this season (four in the league, one in the DFB-Pokal), he has seven scorer points (two goals, five assists). If he maintains this rate, his place in the ÖFB national team will be hard to deny him.

For the national team, he has one scorer point from eight games. This was achieved almost five years ago in the 4-1 World Cup qualifier victory over Moldova, when Marko Arnautovic converted a penalty kick that Grüll had earned.
