World Cup Goalie Replaces Ex-Salzburg Player at RB Leipzig
The veteran had a solid World Cup in goal for Norway; now he returns to his former club.
After the move of former Salzburg goalie Peter Gulasci to Villarreal, RB Leipzig has announced a replacement.
Norwegian World Cup goalie Ørjan Nyland returns to RB on a free transfer after three years in Sevilla.
The 35-year-old receives a two-year contract and the number one shirt. He is expected to serve as a backup goalkeeper behind Maarten Vandevoordt.
The Norwegian drew attention with strong performances at the World Cup, where the Scandinavians were only eliminated by England in the quarter-finals after extra time.
Three Appearances for Leipzig
"When the opportunity arose to return to RB Leipzig, I didn't have to think twice. I have many positive memories associated with the club and the people at Cottaweg, and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone again," said the new goalie.
Sporting Director Marcel Schäfer commented: "With Ørjan, we gain a very experienced goalkeeper whom we already know very well as a player and a person. During his first spell with us, he already showed that he is an absolute team player, a reliable professional, and always ready to take on responsibility. After Pete's departure, it was important for us to complement our goalkeeper group with experience, personality, and sporting quality."
In 2022/23, Nyland wore the Leipzig shirt. He made three appearances as a backup for Peter Gulasci back then.
