Bremen likely finds Schmid successor

Werder Bremen is reportedly on the verge of signing an old acquaintance.

Following the departure of ÖFB national team player Romano Schmid to Frosinone Calcio, Werder Bremen is reportedly set to bring in Eren Dinkci as a successor for the number ten position, according to consistent media reports.

The 24-year-old German-Turk is to be loaned from SC Freiburg for one year. There will reportedly be no purchase option for Werder.

Dinkci Returns to His Roots

Dinkci knows Werder very well. The attacking player made his breakthrough at SVW in 2020 and played a total of 50 competitive matches for Werder until 2023.

Dinkci scored his only goal in a Werder shirt precisely on his Bundesliga debut. In December 2020, the then 19-year-old was substituted on for Romano Schmid in the 85th minute against Mainz 05. With the score at 0-0, Dinkci became the match-winner in the 90th minute, heading in the winning goal.

Now, it is precisely he who is to fill the void left by Schmid after his move to Italy.

Did Not Establish Himself at Freiburg

After his departure from Bremen, Dinkci initially moved on loan to 1. FC Heidenheim and then to SC Freiburg for around five million euros. However, the attacking player was never able to permanently establish himself in Breisgau.

In the second half of last season, Dinkci was once again loaned to 1. FC Heidenheim. There, he made 14 appearances and collected four scorer points. However, Dinkci could not prevent Heidenheim's relegation from the Bundesliga.

Since his contract in Freiburg is still long-term, the return to Bremen is now to be on a loan basis. At the Weser, he is expected to get regular playing time again and take on Schmid's role.

Second Werder Transfer Within Two Days

With Dinkci, Werder would present its second new signing within just two days. On Saturday, Werder already announced the signing of Ludovit Reis.
