SC Freiburg continue to ride a wave of success.

On matchday 9 of the German Bundesliga, the Breisgau side – featuring Philipp Lienhart, who played the full 90 minutes – secured a 2-0 home victory against Union Berlin. Christopher Trimmel and Leopold Querfeld remained on the bench for the Berliners.

The first half proved to be an event-poor affair, although Freiburg were clearly the dominant side and had the better of the chances.

Freiburg turn up the heat

Early in the second half, the deserved opening goal arrived, albeit via a Union player, as Rani Khedira turned a cross from Jan-Niklas Beste into his own net (55').

Shortly after, Yuito Suzuki made it 2-0 (67'). Despite the two-goal deficit, Union offered very little in attack. In the closing stages, Freiburg even had the chance to make it 3-0, but Vincenzo Grifo missed a penalty.

Ultimately, Freiburg secured the victory to remain third behind Bayern and BVB. With 19 points, Julian Schuster's team sit just two points behind the lead pair. Union, meanwhile, remain 16th with seven points.
