Wolfsburg disappoints in league opener against Kaiserslautern

VfL Wolfsburg only manage a 0-0 draw against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on the first matchday of the 2. German Bundesliga.

With six new signings in the starting eleven, the Bundesliga relegated side enters their first game on a mission to return to the top flight, but disappoints for long stretches.

Post hit before the break

Lautern's Skyttä appears in front of keeper Zielinski, who is able to clear (7'). Souza creates Wolfsburg's first chance, but shoots wide (9'). The visitors from Betzenberg hold their own well, especially at the start, with Asta heading well wide from close range (13').

At the other end, Damar's powerful shot narrowly misses the post (15'). The new signing is denied again in the 29th minute by FCK keeper Krahl with another long-range effort (29'). Shortly before half-time, the "Autostädter" are unlucky when Wahl hits the outside of the post with a volley (41').

Lautern sniffs at victory

After the break, Kaiserslautern knocks on the door for the lead, but Zielinski makes a strong save against Skyttä (56'). In the 70th minute, the 18-year-old goalkeeper is called into action again against Kanata.

Wolfsburg fail to pose a threat in front of the Lautern goal in the second half, and the game ultimately ends goalless.

Pavao Pervan remained on the bench for VfL throughout the match, as did Thierry Fidjeu-Tazemeta for the visitors.
