VfB Stuttgart suffered their first Champions League defeat of the current season on Tuesday in Turkey against Galatasaray (to the match report >>>).

In the 0-2 loss, ÖFB international Yanik Spalt made a perhaps unexpected debut in the Champions League.

Because midfield veteran Atakan Karazor had to leave the pitch injured in the middle of the first half, and VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß brought Spalt into the game.

"He definitely put himself forward for further appearances"

After the final whistle, there was special praise for the young Austrian. "Spalti played a huge game. He showed courage and played with the composure of a veteran," quoted "kicker" coach Hoeneß.

ÖFB U21 international Spalt was on the pitch for a total of 72 minutes against "Gala," completed 25 of his 29 passes (86%), and won three out of six ground duels (50%). In first-half stoppage time, he received a yellow card for a foul on double goal-scorer Aleksey Batrakov.

The midfielder has been playing for VfB since 2023. At that time, he moved from the AKA Vorarlberg to the Stuttgart youth academy. Last September, Spalt made his debut in the German Bundesliga.

Most recently, the Bludenz native had been playing in the 3. Liga for Stuttgart's second team again. With his Champions League debut in Istanbul, he has now made a good impression. "He definitely put himself forward for further appearances today," said VfB coach Hoeneß.
