Salzburg Departure? Senior International Makes It Clear: "No Option!"
The Swede has been playing in Salzburg for three years now, and despite limited playing time, a departure is currently not an issue.
With John Mellberg (20), FC Red Bull Salzburg has a Swedish A-international in its ranks.
However, the youngster has rarely featured for Salzburg so far; in three years, he has made eleven appearances for the pros. In the current season, he has only played 87 minutes across three games.
Mellberg Hopes for Playing Time
It is therefore not surprising that Swedish media representatives are speculating about a departure. When asked, Mellberg denies it.
"No, I was injured. That's a lot. Both from my side and from the club's side, we want to continue, I think. Hopefully, I'll get more playing time now," the Swede is quoted by "fotbollskanalen".
The youngster has had a tough time with injuries. "It's tough, of course. I suffered three injuries in a row: to my knee, my back, and my foot. It's hard. But I try to think positively and not fall into complete depression," says the 20-year-old.
Praise for Red Bull
The defender praises the opportunities in Salzburg. "They have a Red Bull rehab center. I was able to train well there and now I feel fit. It was fun to sign the new contract. I know that the club – and also the coach – has great faith in me. I'm looking forward to continuing," he states, denying transfer rumors.
Appearances for cooperation partner Liefering, for whom he played in the past, are not an issue for him and the club. "I want to play as much as possible. If I get the chance, I will do my best. I work hard in training, and if I get to play, then I get to play," Mellberg says regarding playing time.
The hope of still making a breakthrough in Salzburg and getting more playing time is thus still intact. "Hopefully it will be that way. The team has performed well, and those who have played have done a good job," Mellberg also acknowledges.
