Offers Rejected: Hierländer Ends Professional Career
The long-serving Sturm captain was not averse to continuing his career, but is now hanging up his boots.
Stefan Hierländer is hanging up his football boots. The 35-year-old confirmed this to "Krone".
"I am ending my active professional career. It was a fitting conclusion," says the Carinthian, looking back at his dream free-kick goal for SK Sturm in the last Bundesliga round against SK Rapid (2-0).
The long-serving captain was not averse to continuing his active career, but rejected offers from TSV Hartberg and FC Blau-Weiß Linz. "I realized that I can no longer fulfill certain roles," Hierländer states.
Remains with Sturm
The three-time ÖFB national player will remain with Sturm, joining the coaching staff of the second team. He will also be given the opportunity to contribute in a consultative role within management, including squad planning.
"We have created a concept with all these tasks. The position is temporary, after which we will see in which direction I can specialize," Hierländer explains.
The midfielder does not rule out a comeback in the lower leagues. "We'll see if the urge comes," he says.
Four-time Champion, five-time Cup Winner
Hierländer has made 361 appearances in the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, spending the last ten years with Sturm. With the "Blackies" and Red Bull Salzburg, he won the championship four times and the cup five times.
In addition, he had stints abroad with RB Leipzig and in the youth teams of Sampdoria Genoa.
