World Cup Goal by ÖFB Player in the Race for "Goal of the Month" Award
The ÖFB team's first goal at the 2026 World Cup has made it into the preliminary selection for "Goal of the Month June" on Sportschau.
With his opening goal, temporarily making it 1-0 against Jordan, Romano Schmid provided Austria's first emotional highlight at the World Cup.
It was a goal that thrilled people beyond the country's borders. Sportschau has now nominated the goal by the Bremen-based player for "Goal of the Month June". The precise curling shot likely generated enthusiasm in the neighboring country as well.
After being eliminated in the round of 32 against Spain, this award could at least be a small consolation for the 26-year-old. Three other World Cup participants are nominated: Wilson Isidor (Haiti), Eldor Shomurodov (Uzbekistan), and Antonio Nusa (Norway). Also up for selection is Dilara Acikgöz's goal for the German U23 national team against Denmark.
Voting is open until July 26 (8 PM) for free on the Sportschau website.
