Russian Biathlon Olympic Champion Dies Aged 59
Sergei Tchepikov also secured the overall World Cup in 1990 and 1991. He ended his career in 2007.
Former world-class biathlete Sergei Tchepikov has passed away.
This was announced in a statement from the Russian Biathlon Union, which reported that the 59-year-old had been "ill for a long time."
Further information about his death was not shared. The Union found only positive words about the former athlete: "Sergei Tchepikov's sporting career is a prime example of dedication to biathlon."
Six Olympic Medals
In 1988, Tchepikov clinched first place with the Soviet biathlon relay team at the Olympic Games. His greatest success followed in 1994 when he was crowned individual Olympic champion in the biathlon sprint in Lillehammer. Four more medals followed.
He also celebrated various successes in the World Cup, winning the overall World Cup in 1990 and 1991. His career ended in 2007, and in 2016, he became a member of the Russian Parliament.
