Alexander Zverev on Davis Cup format: "Absolute rubbish"
The world No. 2 in tennis dislikes that the final tournament is taking place at a neutral venue.
On Tuesday (12:00 PM), the ÖTV selection will find out its quarter-final opponent for the Davis Cup Final Eight tournament in Bologna (November 24-29) during the draw.
Besides Italy, Spain, and the Czech Republic, Germany is also a potential opponent for the unseeded Austrians.
The Germans secured their participation in the final tournament in Italy with a 3-1 victory against Croatia in Halle (Westphalia).
Zverev wishes for old format to return
US Open champion Alexander Zverev had sealed the decision with his 6-2, 6-4 victory over Dino Prizmic and received a standing ovation.
Afterwards, he criticized the current Davis Cup mode. "What we're playing in Bologna is absolute rubbish. I hope we return to the old format," said the 29-year-old.
The neutral venue in Bologna is an eyesore for him. Zverev also wishes for home and away matches again for the final ties.
"I hope that the decision-makers at the Davis Cup will wake up at some point and see what the real Davis Cup is. Because this weekend was the real Cup," said the world No. 2 after the triumph in Halle (Westphalia).
There is no final commitment from Zverev yet for the Davis Cup final tournament in November.
