Perfect Home Victory! Fritz Triumphs in Washington

Taylor Fritz wins the ATP 500 tournament in Washington, celebrating a long-awaited success on the ATP Tour.

The third-seeded American defeated Spanish rising star Rafael Jodar 7:6(2), 6:4 in the final to secure his eleventh ATP title overall. For Fritz, it is also his first triumph at ATP 500 level since his tournament victory in Tokyo in 2022.

Jodar, who had eliminated Lorenzo Musetti and Arthur Fils among others on his way to the final, missed out on the biggest success of his young career.

Tiebreak decides first set

The first set developed into an even contest.

Both players created a break point in the early stages but failed to convert. Subsequently, the servers dominated proceedings, with longer rallies being a rarity.

Consequently, a tiebreak was needed to decide the set. Fritz demonstrated his full experience there, securing the first mini-break at 1:1 and immediately confirming it with an ace.

Another mini-break for a 5:2 lead ultimately put the American on the winning path, and shortly after, he converted his first set point for a 7:2 win in the tiebreak.

Fritz takes early break

At the start of the second set, Fritz finally secured the first break of the match.

Jodar fought hard in a lengthy service game but squandered three game points before the local favorite converted his first break opportunity.

Shortly after, Fritz followed up with another break for a 3:0 lead, seemingly deciding the final early.

Rebreak, then Fritz keeps his nerve

However, the 19-year-old Spaniard did not give up. After a double fault from Fritz on break point, Jodar managed to rebreak for 1:3, before shortening the deficit to 2:3.

A three-minute medical timeout for the Spaniard due to wrist problems at 5:4 somewhat unsettled Fritz in the final marathon game.

The American squandered four match points and suddenly even had to fend off a break point. A little later, however, Fritz finally converted his fifth match point for a 7:6(2), 6:4 victory, celebrating the home win.

For the world number seven, the title is a liberation after he had already lost three finals this season – in Halle, Dallas, and Stuttgart. At the same time, Fritz celebrates his first ATP 500 triumph in nearly four years.
