Eyes on the title: Zverev reaches Shanghai semifinals
The German thus preserves his chance to become number one already in Vienna.
Alexander Zverev is in the semifinals of Shanghai and still has a chance for his first Masters 1000 title this season.
The German tennis star, showing no signs of ankle problems from previous rounds, defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 6:4, 6:4 in Thursday's quarterfinals.
In the battle for a spot in the final, he will now face Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP-26).
Zverev had lost the two previous encounters with de Minaur - both at the Laver Cup.
Can become World No. 1 in Vienna
Should Zverev triumph in Shanghai, a semifinal appearance at the tournament in Vienna in two weeks would already be enough for him. With a Shanghai final, he would have to win the title in Vienna to achieve it in Austria.
It is now certain that Zverev will definitely be World No. 1 by the end of the year. Jannik Sinner currently still leads the rankings.
However, the Italian has ended his season prematurely due to persistent knee problems and can no longer defend his world ranking points from last year.
