Wimmer: "Wanted to get away from Carinthia"
The WAC captain is currently sidelined due to a cruciate ligament tear. It could hardly have gotten worse for the 31-year-old.
Wolfsberger AC is currently experiencing a downturn. With five points, they are only bottom of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga table.
Most recently, they suffered a 0-3 defeat against SCR Altach. WAC had to endure all of this without captain Nicolas Wimmer. The 31-year-old has been out since early September after tearing his cruciate ligament in his left knee during the UNIQA ÖFB-Cup match against Parndorf.
"I screamed and cried so much. The pain was so extreme," Wimmer recalls in an interview with "Krone".
Wimmer just wanted to get away
"Why me? Why for the third time? Why at a time when I've become captain and everything is going well? All for such a worthless cup match. It hurts incredibly," Wimmer says, looking back with immense frustration at the third cruciate ligament tear of his career, the first in his left knee.
Shortly after the injury, he just wanted some distance: "I didn't want to see anyone, talk to anyone, get out of Carinthia, just be with my family. So we all went to Steyr."
Meanwhile, Wimmer has his sights set forward again. Next week, the central defender will start his rehabilitation in Innsbruck.
Captain calls on WAC teammates: "That has to change"
He has, of course, also followed his club's current woes.
"It feels like we're not performing as a team, no one has confidence, many individual errors are happening. And there's no one there to step in and speak up! That has to change, we have to perform differently," Wimmer demands from his teammates.
He himself will not play again this season. His goal is to be back at full strength for the preparation of next season.
For his WAC teammates, things continue on Sunday. At 2:30 PM, the Lavanttal side will face WSG Tirol in front of their home crowd - in the LIVE ticker >>>
